When We "Get To"

The change in my own mindset that was a total game changer for me was shifting from “have to” to “get to”. When I took every mundane task and every major one and looked at it from a “hey, I get to do this” perspective, over time I was able to move more and more into gratitude for more and more and more of my life. It was not easy at first. I mean really. I get to clean this toilet! Yeah! Bullshit! I get to scrub this floor after the dog just puked on it. Oh yeah! Sign me up.

I was totally faking it in the beginning of this experiment. Completely admit it. I was sarcastic and absolutely not feeling it but then, almost imperceptibly I shifted. It became “yes, I get to clean this floor and thank goodness I have a floor. And this dog just threw up on the floor but what a beautiful friend I have in this dog. This wonderful toilet is a convenience I am so grateful for. Let me clean it. I began to smile more and wouldn’t you know - that feeling continued to grow.

Eventually, that gratitude began to spill out into more and more places in my life. I noticed that I was a lot easier on myself and others. I was a lot calmer and I was more allowing. I was able to see the beauty in the little things and in those little things I began to see more love. I am not saying it always stays this way but I can say that I find it easier to slide back into this mindset. It’s a practice that I am grateful I discovered and it’s a practice that I am committed to continuing to lean into.

So, where can you lean into what you get to do? Where can you find more gratitude in your day to day lives? How can you lean more into the beauty of the everyday? You matter! Never forget that.

I encourage your exploration and send you my love.

I got to send you this message today and that felt ah-mazing!
